The default recommendation
"Every shliach must have at least one paid AI plan. $20 is באין ערוך."
A poll the same day: 24 paid, 13 free-only. A majority, but not consensus.
The economic argument
- Free ChatGPT throttles at roughly five substantive queries a day and limits uploads. Sufficient for casual use, insufficient for any flyer batch, data cleanup, or file-heavy workflow.
- Plus ($20) lifts the wall enough that most shluchim stop noticing it.
- Pro, Max, and Ultra ($100 to $200) earn their keep only for true power users (Manus.im agent flows, Claude Code long sessions, deep research, Nano Banana Pro at scale).
The free-trial gauntlet

The counter-position
"Don't feel pressured."
One member discontinued a paid plan due to low usage and works fine on free, with occasional Perplexity for research. The argument: if you are not yet generating real flyers, letters, and spreadsheets daily, $20 is wasted money. Start free and upgrade when you hit the wall.
"Once you understand the limits, you'll upgrade naturally."
What burns cost
Usage that turns Pro plans into Max plans into "I'm spending $300 a month":
- Claude Code or Cursor for vibe-coding. Token-heavy; Cursor users routinely reported $300 to $500 a month.
- Deep Research workflows in Gemini or ChatGPT.
- Long context windows. Long shiur transcripts and multi-document research notebooks.
- Agent runs. Lovable, Manus.im, and Claude Dispatch or Cowork: minutes of work equal a lot of tokens.
The frugal alternative stack
If you are committed to spending little:
- Google AI Studio for free high-token Gemini access (better than the Gemini app for some tasks).
- Google Workspace Nonprofit if your Chabad House qualifies; it gets you Gemini and the storage tier.
- Free Hebrew transcription: ivrit.ai (
transcribe.ivrit.ai). - Perplexity Pro via the Samsung Galaxy Store route.
- Turboscribe free tier (three transcripts a day).
- Lovable or Base44 free credits for tiny prototypes; graduate to Claude Code (free with Claude Pro) for anything serious.
