ChabadLabs AI FOR SHLICHUS

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

OpenAI's flagship chat product; the usual on-ramp for shluchim new to AI and the default general-purpose drafting tool.

On this page

ChatGPT is the on-ramp for most shluchim in the community, and the default answer to "which AI should I start with?" through May 2026.

What it is

OpenAI's flagship chat product. The tiers referenced in the community:

TierPriceNotable
Free$0Roughly 5 substantive queries/day; limited uploads
Go$8/moMiddle tier between Free and Plus. Released February 2026.
Plus$20/moDefault for serious use. Unlimited within fair use.
Pro$200/moConnectors (Gmail, etc.); higher rate limits; Deep Research.
Teams / BusinessvariesRequired for the OpenAI nonprofit discount and the Amex offer below.
Edu / Teachersfree through 2027openai.com/index/chatgpt-for-teachers/

Models cited over the community's run: GPT-4o, GPT-5, GPT-5.2 (a turning point for image generation, late 2025), GPT-5.5 (April 2026), and "Codex for OSS" (a free 6-month Pro tier for open-source developers).

What the community uses it for

  • General-purpose drafting: letters, emails, social posts, press releases. See Letter Writing.
  • Image generation: historically weak, but GPT Image 2 (ChatGPT's built-in image generation) is now considered on par with or better than Nano Banana Pro.
  • Spreadsheet wrangling: cleaning dates, capitalization, and zip codes; ChatGPT Plus is required for bulk uploads.
  • Voice-to-text dictation: one member said "ChatGPT voice-to-text is amazing. Haven't found any even close."
  • Email integration (Pro): connect to Gmail to search and analyze. Behavior is intermittent and sometimes refuses access.
  • Project memory: but it does not cross-reference between projects or with non-project chats, which the community treats as a limitation.
  • Custom GPTs: reusable configurations for repeated workflows, such as drafting in a consistent eulogy style.

Strengths the community agrees on

  • Best-in-class mobile experience.
  • Easiest learning curve for non-technical shluchim.
  • Image generation now co-leading, via GPT Image 2.
  • Reliable voice mode and dictation.

Weaknesses

  • Does not "see" what it generated; image edits revert to defaults.
  • Hallucinates Torah citations (see AI and Torah Accuracy).
  • "Sugar-coats," being sycophantic by default. This is fixable with explicit prompts (see the honest-feedback section of Letter Writing).
  • Direct PDF upload is "a disaster"; better to extract the text first.
  • Rate-limit slowdowns have been reported on Plus.
  • Gmail integration is "clunky."

Discounts and hacks

  • Samsung Perplexity Pro for one year (not ChatGPT, but recommended in lieu). See Perplexity.
  • Amex offer: on certain Amex cards, a $300 annual credit effectively covers 2 ChatGPT Business seats for the price of 1 for up to 4 years.
  • Codex for Open Source: a free 6 months of Pro for open-source developers (openai.com/form/codex-for-oss).
  • Teachers: free through 2027.
  • Nonprofit: 20% via Goodstack verification (hard to qualify; academic, medical, and governmental organizations are excluded).
